Learning to throw away your mailing list will save your
music career!
Most developing and even major label artists make the same
common mistake of building a mailing list from the people
who have come to past performances. While collecting someone’s
contact information is not bad of course, artists lose touch
with reality when they continually send this person flyer
after flyer saying I’m playing here, I’m playing there. Month
after month.
Well folks guess what. In reality, once that person has seen
you once or twice, they will probably be bored with you for
a while. Once they have bought your CD and maybe some of your
other merchandise...THEY ARE USELESS TO YOU.
The key to playing shows is not how much the club or venue
is going to pay you but how much are you going to make off
of selling the CDs during and after the show!! Instead of
spending $100, $200 or more, mailing flyers, inviting the
same people to another show, which they have already come
to, don’t sell yourself short.
Make boxes of 2 or 3 song sample tapes and hand them out
to everyone you meet in town that looks like they could be
in the audience of your next show! Get to meet your future
fans on their turf. Act like your running for political office.
Get out and meet the people.
Its more fun to play for a room full of people who already
know “some” of your music because they have been listening
to your tape in the car! Plus they will probably by a CD when
your done because they already liked it BEFORE they came.
Think for a minute. What works better when handing something
to someone you don’t know, telling them about your music.
A flyer they can’t hear or a cassette to listen to in the
car!
Once they come to your shows and buy CDs, find more new fans.
Leave more at home for the next show. You’re going to start
making some $$$.
